Do I need a boat license to be a member?
No, you do not need a boat license to join Pacific Boating however you will require a General Boat License to take a boat out for the day. We are perfectly suited for individuals new to boating, as well as experienced boaters. We provide a comprehensive training programme as part of all our memberships. This training programme will provide you with the necessary log book required to obtain your General Boat License.
Can we all do our training together?
Our training programmes are designed to be delivered to a maximum of two people on any given day. This allows our trainers to provide the maximum amount of time to each trainee, ensuring each member is allocated adequate time and we move through the training at an ideal pace. Where additional skippers are being added to a membership, we will pair them up, to a maximum of two people on any given training session.
What kind of training do you provide for new members?
For all new members, regardless of prior experience, we provide extensive training. This includes practical on-water training covering all aspects of the boating logbook for New South Wales. Our trainers will familiarise you with every aspect of the boat for the specific membership class you are joining, including where everything is onboard, the location of all switches and facilities, practical on-water training, and berthing (bringing the boat in and out of the marina). We also cover general boating practices. After completing our training, you will visit RMS (Roads and Maritime Services) with your signed logbook to complete a multiple-choice quiz and obtain your boat license. This mandatory training ensures all members are safe, competent, and confident and comfortable operating our boats in most situations. Every member will also be required to undergo an annual review and update of their operational capabilities of PBG Boats, signed off by the PBG Training Officer.
Can I have my kids trained on the boat?
Pacific Boating has a strict age policy of 29 years and above. Unfortunately, this means that if your child is not old enough to meet that age requirement, they will not be able to be trained as a skipper on one of our boats. That said, family members are, on a case-by-case basis, welcome to join the primary skipper of your membership on the first day of training where we go through both familiarization, line handling, and other aspects of boating which can be greatly assisted by having a crew member with you. In some instances where your child is sufficiently old enough and mature enough to take part in this, we will be happy to facilitate that in consultation with our trainers.
What if I have a boat license from another state in Australia or from another country?
While Australian boating law is generally consistent across states, if you reside in New South Wales, you will require a NSW licence to take control of a Pacific Boating cruiser. If you hold a boating license from another Australian state it is easily transferable to a New South Wales license. If you have an international boat license, you will need to obtain a New South Wales license.
Do you have an age limit at Pacific Boating?
Yes, we require all our members to be 29 years or older to have a Pacific Boating membership.
Is there any additional training throughout the membership?
Yes, our commitment is to ensure you remain confident, competent and safe on the water throughout your membership. We offer refresher training if you haven’t cruised for a certain period. We also provide top-up training for specific boating aspects, such as anchoring, mooring, berthing, or night operation. We adopt a safety-first approach and offer unlimited training to our members. This training does not come with any additional cost and doesn’t count against your cruise allocation.
Is there any other compulsory training?
In addition to the initial training provided at the start of your membership, we offer night navigation training for those members that wish to lengthen their cruise into the evening. This is an extra training session, conducted after sunset with fellow members and one of our competent trainers, to teach you how to safely navigate on the water at night. This training session includes how to recognise navigational markers, areas to avoid, and an understanding of how the operation of a vessel differs from that in the daytime. To continue to cruise after sunset, you must have successfully completed the PBG Night Operation Training Course plus three daytime cruises.
Can I stay overnight on any of your boats?
You can stay overnight on our 44-foot and 52-foot boats, and we highly recommend doing so. There are few boating experiences more enjoyable than going to sleep and waking up in one of Sydney’s pristine bays. Our 32-foot boats are designed for day use only and do not accommodate overnight stays. While every booking is for 22 hours (allowing you to stay out on a 32-foot boat until late into the night), it must be returned to the marina by 8:00 AM the following morning.
Can I put membership under a business name?
Yes, Pacific Boating provides the ability for you to put your membership under a business name. We highly recommend that you speak to your accountant before doing so. The contract will be able to have your business name and details, as well as a reference for invoicing purposes on your membership fees.
How many people can I take on a boat?
The maximum number of people you can take on a boat depends on the boat class. The 32-foot boat is licensed for 8 people, the 44-foot and 52-foot boats are licensed for 12 people during the day, and 6 or 7 people overnight respectively.
How many skippers can I have trained?
There is no limit to the number of people who can join a membership. Each one will need to pay our $1500 joining fee and complete our compulsory training course.
Are children and babies counted as full people for capacity limits?
Yes, for safety and regulatory reasons, all individuals, including children and babies, are counted as full people towards the boat’s maximum capacity.
Can my partner or other people drive the boat?
If you wish for additional individuals to have the ability to drive or book boats on your membership, they can join as joint members or ‘skippers’. They will undergo our full training program to ensure they are as safe and competent on the water as you are. Any person without authorization from PBG is not permitted to drive the PBG Boats at any time.
Are we allowed to fish from the boats?
You’re more than welcome to fish from our boats. As a shared boating option, we do ask that you consider both our team and your fellow members when it comes to the cleanliness involved in fishing from our boats. Please wash anything down that’s required to maintain the cleanliness of the boat. As an added feature, most of our fleet do include rod holders; please speak to a membership team or one of the operations team prior to your cruise if you would like to have access to a boat with rod holders for your cruise.
Do I have to clean the boat myself?
Upon your return to the marina at the end of the day, assuming you arrive within our service hours, you are only responsible for stepping off the boat with your rubbish and ensuring your dishes are clean. Our team then take over, handling the packing away of the boat, washing, cleaning, fuelling (if required), topping up water tanks, and preparing it for the next member. Members returning PBG Boats in an unreasonable condition, as solely determined by PBG, will be charged a minimum fee (estimated at $500) for rubbish removal and excess detailing. This fee may be increased to reflect the actual cost of cleaning. Members are responsible for ensuring guests are aware of correct toilet operation and no foreign objects are disposed of; a minimum fee (estimated at $500) will be charged for blocked toilets or excess cleaning from them.
Can I make changes to the membership, such as payment splits?
Yes, all aspects of your membership can be set up to suit your needs. You can choose to have all payments made by one primary person, or they can be split equally or in varying percentages to suit your preferences. We are flexible and strive to make involvement as easy as possible for everyone.
Do I have to park the boats myself?
All members, through their training process, are trained to competently berth their boats in a variety of locations on both waterways and in different conditions. That said, with our operations teams at both locations, there is additional flexibility to assist you on the day of your cruise if wind or weather conditions are proving less favourable. Our support from an operational perspective can extend to everything from coming out and getting on board and bringing the boat into its berth on your behalf, to having a team member onboard the boat, standing next to you and able to assist you and guide you as you bring the boat into the berth yourself.
Can I bring my pet on board?
Can I leave the boat at anchor, on mooring or on a marina during my cruise?
We require a person to be on board at all times when the boat is at anchor and on a mooring, however we are fine for you to berth on a marina and leave the boat to have lunch in a restaurant.
